    Report
After a long break of 15 days without so much as a touch of ball on stick due to weather problems, Sutton Valence knew that a hard battle was in no doubt, in their away game against Old Williamsonians.
Changing their formation to suit their game, Valence soon settled in and were playing positive hard hockey.
A goal from Steve Waldrom from a p-flick saw Sutton Valence settle and 1: 0 was feeling comfortable. Debutant Daryl Cassidy looked cool and slotted in nicely to the side.
A turned down p-flick against Waldrom saw Valence surge and a well executed strike by Waldrom from a gained short corner made it 2 : 0. Briggs and Pascoe worked well and Gillet was a work horse, but after a sending off for Dion Ashton, Valence had to battle on with ten men. Then debutant Daryl Cassidy made it 3 : 0 as Gillet eased him the ball to slot home.
But for having ten men for the remainder of the second-half, Sutton Valence could have scored two or three more, but the finishing touch was missing
Battling hard, Sutton Valence were very comfortable, even after a scrappy goal against them, with a final result of 3 : 1.
A good, gutsy performance. With a shoot-out between Marden and Sutton Valence for League champions appearing inevitable, Sutton Valence are getting stronger each week and looking forward to the close-fought final stages of this League battle.

The 4s were ready and up for a tough game, but the opposition had other ideas. Due to problems with public they were running late. Coupled with the unfortunate mishap of their keeper and 2 players being stranded on the M2 in a broken down car it wasn’t looking good. Board’s started with 8 and valence went about scoring goals. Well trying to. Despite an open goal there were still some misses. Notably, Mark Whitmill will have to relive the un- kept, open goal that he missed. Even now he will be reliving that moment wondering just went wrong. Scoring 4 goals as recompense will not cover up the miss. Board’s did not go down quietly and scored a good goal after a passage of neat passing and sustained pressure. Just before the half we evened up the sides a little by letting Al-bert keep for the opposition. This helped the 4s by giving them a target to hit and actually resulted in more goal being scored. At half time the game was technically won so Sonic swapped to play for the visitors to make their trip worthwhile. Boards forces another goal with the help of a defensive assist and valance increased their lead with 4 by Alex Stamp, 2 by Chad Henderson and 1 by Henry Robinson. The game was played in good spirits and Boards put up a good fight against the odds. Final score 11-2

    Report
Originally both this season’s games against Purley had been booked as ‘away’, but following a request Purley graciously agreed to play this one at Sutton Valence, despite their normal requirement of playing on grass. It wasn’t their first visit. At least, due to the School’s absence on holiday, it could be played at 14.15 rather than in the morning. Hopefully they will come again.
As happens at this time of the year, both teams were tight on numbers, with Purley’s eleven including Emily on their right wing. We know Emily from her capable umpiring on visits to Purley, and her playing skills were no less positive, keeping Gray very active in defence.
It always takes Valence the first quarter of the game to get to grips with grass, when we play on it, but Purley showed no such need in translating their game from grass to astro and quickly brought pressure on Valence’s midfield and backs. Their speed in cutting out Valence’s moves and accurate passing soon brought results, though both early goals ended up as ‘stolen’ taps-in by Scott, one of their younger forwards. During this part of the first half Bob Sagrott got hit on the side of his head by a ball lifted into the dee and further raised by a defender’s stick. Though bleeding, he returned to the field with a plaster on and played out not only the rest of the first half, but the rest of the game.
Valence were getting attacks together now, but long balls through were being cut out too easily and some of the other excursions which got through to the dee ended in misdirected or half-hearted shots easily despatched by Purley’s keeper.
Purley’s third goal was a much more direct piece of passing ending with a fine shot out of Valence Keeper Dave Britton’s reach.
The second half was possibly more even, with Valence making better attacking moves, particularly in the final quarter, with Fermor, Humphrey and Bates getting some good passing between them. Once again though, the final stage of conversion proved elusive. In the end it took an accurate short corner strike from Rupert Humphrey to get the one consolation goal, but only after Purley had added their fourth from a break-out from a long corner and a clinical strike just feet from the goal.

Man of the Match: Paul Linaker, but only because he was playing following celebrating his 75th birthday the day before. Some people just don’t recognise when it’s time to stop!

On 25th February Sutton Valence Vets are playing Canterbury Friars away at 10.30, in the second of their ‘trophy’ games with one narrow win under their belts.

    Report
After last week’s hard fought win, Sutton Valence were up for the local derby with Maidstone.
Valence started strongly and controlled the first fifteen minutes, but it was Maidstone who took the lead with a trade mark short corner routine. Buoyed by this Maidstone started to press, but with strong defensive work and a goal line clearance from Mo, Valence equalised with some quick passing and good movement, finishing with Marcus, aka dg, tapping in from six inches!
Valence started to push, but after some lucky touches and an unfortunate rebound, Maidstone capitalised and at half time it was 2 : 1 to the visitors.
After the “we play better when we're behind” team talk, Valence went looking for the equaliser, but an aerial ball from Maidstone left their striker teeing it up with a one-on-one with Al Burt, the Valence keeper. With a cracking shot, and the striker peeling away to celebrate the third goal, Al Burt, at full stretch pulled out a top corner stunner.
With Maidstone stunned, Willson popped up at the back post and picked out the cross to rifle it past the Maidstone keeper. At 2 : 2 Valence could feel revenge coming and pressed hard and once again dg popped up to finish from another well worked move; 3 : 2 revenge achieved.
A very satisfying win from a great team effort!
