Conditions were perfect for the first league match of the 2005/6 season, which saw Brighton arrive en massed early and well prepared in their warm, this counted for them as they were quickly out of their blocks and making most of the play with strong linked running through the midfield, SV were with their backs against the wall, having to defend as number of early short corners. Fortunately these weren't converted, with keeper Burt pulling off a number of great saves. SV were able to make a few breaks and began to peg Brighton back and were rewarded with their own short corners. Mike Shelton skillfully struck home a bounced shot over their diving keeper and SV were 1 up, certainly against the run of play. Midway through the first half Brighton equalised, and SV still looked sluggish.

After the turn SV woke up and had much better possession making good linked play, it was a much more even contest, however Brighton caught SV on the break and scored a relatively soft goal. An unfortunate injury to the Brighton skipper stopped play as a bad cut to his knee needed attention. An extra SV team talk regalvanised them to greater efforts, and soon after Leader missed a near post effort from another short corner which would have levelled the score. From this another break away by Brighton saw ina well worked goal. It finished 1-3, which was a deserved win for Brighton but the score flatters.

After an initial 'wobbly' period, Sutton Valence started to control the game and eventually the pressure resulted in a short with Rupert Humphrey scoring directly. Ben Palmer controlled the mid field, providing some excellent distribution to the forwards. James Clarke made an impressive debut.

In the second half, Suttons control turned to domination with Ben Palmer scoring an excellent deflection goal. Sutton were then let off the hook when a Penalty flick awarded to new Becs was reversed. A final goal by Terry Laing put the game out of reach and Sutton made a successful start to their Season. Man of the match went to David Paine for his excellent defensive work.

The 4th team played their opening league game against New Beccs, looking to improve on the 1 – 0 victory in their previous meeting.

Fielding another unfamiliar line-up, the 4ths started the game brightly. A solid defence allowed Sutton to build some attacking momentum, giving the forwards some good opportunities to open the scoring. Valence dominated much of the first half, but once again lacked that little bit of luck in front of goal. After several wasted short corners, the forwards finally made one count with a well worked move- Tony Auger finishing well for his first of the game. Valence continued to press and things looked good as half-time approached. Soon after the break, New Beccs scored a very soft goal which really changed the game. Both teams now started to play very direct hockey which stretched the game and created opportunities at both ends. Valence were soon back in the lead when Rob Ife went on a rampaging run from defence, breaking through some weak New Beccs tackles. Once inside the D, he poked the ball to Tony who duly struck home. Valence quickly stretched their lead after some excellent work from new boy John Counsell- his persistence in the D was followed by a nicely judged lay-off to Man of the Match Darren Thompson, who clattered the ball past the ‘Keeper.

Having seemingly tied up the match, Valence then went into ‘Self Destruct’ Mode. New Beccs threw caution to the wind in search of their second goal and Valence really started to struggle. After defending several short corners, Valence finally succumbed to another soft goal- poor marking allowing a New Beccs forward to stroke the ball into the corner. Valence were soon down to 10 men when Tony got himself a yellow card. Without a real outlet upfront, the 4ths spent the remainder of the game battling bravely to protect their narrow lead. The final whistle could not come soon enough and when it did, it was to a collective sigh of relief that the win had been secured.

Sutton valence Ladies continued their run of success with an emphatic win over Canterbury 3rd team.

Some sharp determined passing gave valence the advantage within 10 minutes with an opportunistic goal from Georgie Pares. In quick succession a strike from Sarah Lacey found itself in the back of the net. Solid defensive work by Emma Donkersley and Sarah Leggat provided the foundations on which the forwards could prepare their next attack. Some interlinking play between Penny Tragett and Anna Kish and Holly Stamp created an opening for Georgie’s second goal. Anna continued her good form and slotted in a cross from Penny Tragett.

Following half time, Canterbury stepped the pace up a little but an deterred forward line broke the defence down to win several successive short corners. A well executed strike by Carol Hazelton extended valence’s lead. A Pares hat trick was a fitting finish for well deserved win for the home side.

Ashford fielded a hotpotch side which contained 3 or 4 very experienced players in critical positions & a number of very able youngsters (Veterans??).

The match started with Sutton Valence looking as though there would be no problems in beating Ashford; however after a break away goal from Ashford the ambience of the game changed. With the considerable advantage of youth the speed pf the breakaways overwhelming the SV midfield Soon began to wilt. Combined with some extremely well taken short corners from Ashford, SV struggled to get back in the game despite the defence apparently having a solid game.

Stuart Bates picked up 2 very well taken goals from short corners reminiscent of his youth.
