'Valence dominate from start to finish' Sutton Valence put together a fantastic team display at the weekend and had it not been for an outsatnding goalkeeping performance from the Mid Sussex no.1 it could have been much, much worse.

Starting the brighter side Valence quickly pushed the Sussex side back and looked to force them into a chasing game. Build up was patient and organised from Valence and it wasn't long before the pressure began to tell through the forcing of several short corners. The deadlock was eventually broken from open play, neat passing down the left, first through Bray then Kirkham, it was Kevin 'KK' Kirkham who slid the ball to Posnette running from midfield to finish.

The pace of Valences passing increased and soon Mid Sussex were two down with a goal through Turnill. Goal 3 quickly followed a long ball from Chris Back was edged through to Waldrom from Willson and bang! 3-0. Halftime gave Mid Sussex the chance to come up with an escape plan, but it never materialised. The goal of the game came from a lethal finish from Waldrom, Willson cross was hit first time - the keeper never moved. KK was eventually rewarded with a goal that cut the keeper in two, this made things 5-0 and Mid Sussex were crying out for the final whistle.

Sunday 9th October - Kent Cup First Round Tunbridge Wells 2 Sutton Valence 3 Valence dominated the game with two goals from Kevin 'KK' Kirkham and a cool finish from Tom Morgan.

A cracking day for a game of hockey! SV arrived at Old Holcs ground looking much sharper and were better prepared than the week before, with the team bolstered by new boy Clint, and debut appearance also by James Clark. SV started brightly and controlled much of the first half against a good Old Holcs team, and were justly rewarded midway through the first half with a series of short corners, Bob Bartlett firing home from the top of the D. SV continued to settle and pushed the ball around well, controlled by midfield man Andy Lee. Even the one or two scarey passing moves didn't cause too much concern to the solid defence. In fact SVs left back was given so much room he was able to take a jolly run from his position right to the top of the scoring zone only to be denied when Old Holcs woke up and realised was about to shoot!

The second half continued with SV in control, only the pace began to slaken off and Old Holcs made more foraging runs of their own with fast pace and skill coming from the right half. A breakdown of attack by SV left the defence slightly exposed and Old Holcs broke well and finished with a rather soft goal. SV still looked good for more goals and weren't too concerned, especially as some good link up play was giving plenty of good chances, Lee was put through with an open goal but again a last ditched effort by a covering defender saw the well struck shot hit straight at the stick. And then worst of all another breakaway run and a one-on-one on last week's MoM Burt saw the ball squeeze between his feet to leave SV with little time to salvage any points.

SV were disappointed by the resulted but have gained confidence in their abilities to settle as a team and prospects are encouraging, despite the miss Andy Lee was awarded MoM for something, best chat in the tea room I think.

Sutton Valence went to University of Kent for their second league game of the Season.

From the start of the game Sutton Valence were under pressure - only excellent play by David Paine and Goalkeeper Greg Stacey kept the scores level. Eventually the pressure was too much and a relatively easy goal was let in by the Defence.

The second half was a much better performance with a University of Kent second goal being countered by one from Richard Dickenson. Chris Stilles attacks down the right hand side put more pressure on the University of Kent. However the last 10 minute of pressure could not be converted into a goal so Sutton went down 2 – 1 to a strong University of Kent side. Again, David Paine was man of the match.

With yet more new faces, the 4ths started their second league game with a bang. Inside the opening 5 minutes, Valence opened the scoring; Haimer Atkins applied the finish to an excellent ball into the D. Valence then settled into a good rhythm, dominating play and putting Ashford under plenty of pressure. An experienced and very physical Ashford side provided several scares for the 4ths, but the ‘Keeper and his defence held firm. Some reckless Ashford tackles went unpunished by their Umpire, including a ridiculous body-check inside the Ashford D. However, Sutton went further ahead with a good move topped off by new boy John Kittermaster.

After the break Sutton lacked shape and Ashford capitalised, forcing a P-flick that was narrowly converted at the second attempt. Dodgy challenges started to come thick and fast- the Ashford Umpire’s previous indecision coming back to haunt him. Ashford then drew level with a good team goal. The game became stretched and Valence soon scored their third, this time Kittermaster converting from a short corner. Ashford fought until the end and scored a soft goal, earning them an ‘only just deserved’ point. After a good display against a team that should be in the mix at the end of the season, Valence will take plenty of positives from the Ashford game. However, the team must reflect on losing the second half 3-1.

    3 - 0 WIN (P Tragett 3)

    Report

Greenwich Polygons and Sutton Valence are veterans of the 4th division and usually the teams are very close in ability, but saturday proved a very different story. Valence's passing outclassed the Polygons and the defensive duo of the Leggat sisters kept goalie Riona Evenden safe from any danger. Holly Stamp had a fantastic game on right wing for the home side and was instrumental in Penny Tragett's first goal.

The second goal for the Valence striker was as a result of a long ball in from Nikki Leggat from outside the D. Valence could have double their goal tally if some of the shots from outside the D had been capitalised on, but on 3 occassions these found themselves in the back of the net having had no contact with a Valence player beforehand. Whilst there was room for improvement, this was not to Valence's detriment as a third shot on goal by Tragett flew pass the keeper to seal her hat-trick and the Polygon's defeat.

On a beautiful autumn day in the Weald of Kent a piece of history was made. Jasmine Kittermaster became the first Sutton Russets ladies captain to register a win.

What a win it was too, in the teams third league game they started to look like a team at last, with some Great passing and tackling they took the game to Blackheath. (who had won there first two games and were top of the league) Mel Russell-Vick scored 2 early goals to give the visitors something to think about. Again, the team played well and worked hard to give Mel R-V her Hat trick before half time, but with a quick goal by Blackheath made it 3 - 1 at Half time.

The second half started very much as the First half with superb passing movements and team work, Mel R-V star of the First half kept the score ticking over to record a second half Hat trick, her last goal a fantastic reverse sweep into the goal to leave the goalkeeper stranded, Not to let Mel take all the limelight Sally Ovary stepped up onto a Great pass to give the home team there 7th goal at some stage during that half Blackheath scored a second goal, but by that stage Sutton Russets had the game in the bag to register a win.

Well done to Bonnie who played in goal for the first time, with some fine saves, and to the rest of the team, it was a Great game to win, but more importantly a team performance to be proud of. If you keep playing as a team like that you could do wonders in this league. Last but not least, well done to Mel for her 6 great goals. ( Mr Russell-vick better send you out with more pocket money if she keeps this up)

At the start of the game it looked as though Sutton Valence were going to overpower the usually strong “Black Nights” with good probing attacks coming from Godfrey Palmer & the new “Hit Man” Stuart (Min) Bates, but it wasn’t long before the Black nights settled into their more usual mode of play, moving the ball around extremely well. Sutton Valence were controlled well from the Mid Field by John (the Pipe) Posnette, recently returned from injury & his creative play assisted in a well taken goal via Palmer & Bates by Charlie (The hanger) Worsfold.

Black Nights were none too pleased with this & upped their tempo to score twice resulting in a win 2-1.
The Stand-in goal keeper Any (Butt Head) Bevis established himself as the find of the season, having an absolutely outstanding first time game in goal preventing the score from being wider. An extremely well matched & enjoyable game played in the usual good spirit as is usual in Veterans games
