Double Hatrick for Tom secures Suttons Dream Sutton Valence U14 Boys - Kent Champions 2005 - 2006 Sutton Valence U14 boys won the Kent league for the first time in the clubs 52 year history as they beat Old Bordeanians 6 - 0.
SV had to win this game by 7 clear goals to win the league outright on a better goal difference than Bromley and Beckenham. But this was always going to be tough as Old Boardeanians had proven to be tough opposition always scoring in their previous matches.
Right from the start of the game Sutton forced themselves to be in control with strong midfield control by Max Ife (Captain), Nick Holmes, James Watkins and Dominic Bailey. The ball was quickly passed up field to Suttons forwards with James Stanford using his speed to work around the defence. This tactic soon paid off as Tom Edwards scored the first as he poached the ball in front of the keeper.
Much to Old Boards credit their heads didn't go down and although Sutton remained in control Old Boards defence worked well and soon started to frustrate Sutton as the every attack failed. However, the pressure was building and 8 minutes before half time Tom Edwards poached another goal in a goalmouth tussle. As soon as the game restarted Tom Edwards and James Stanford had closed down Old Boards - stolen the ball and managed to score the third - once again Tom Edwards getting the final touch. With one minute to half time Sutton attacked down the left with Ben Gallafant passing to Nick Holmes who managed to win a short corner. Up came Charlie Brook to power in a shot which was deflected in to the goal for Suttons fourth - by 'you've guessed it' Tom Edwards!!
Suttons plan was to get straight back out and knock home the final three goals which were needed, but Old Boardeanians had other plans and the game soon developed into an epic struggle. Suttons defence came into the game with Phil Beech playing superbly using his speed to close down attackers. With Dougie Muir and Charlie Brook giving defensive support Old Boardeanians needed a lot to get a shot on goal. But whenever they succeeded - Sutton's Keeper William Aldridge made fantastic saves to make it look like this must be Suttons day. Just as Sutton started to get frustrated as no further goals were coming - up stepped Tom Edwards dribbled through into the D and powered in a shot to the back board. 5-0 to Sutton and 10 minutes left to play.
As Sutton pushed forward to get the 6th all looked doomed as shots were cleared off the line or just pushed wide. Then in another moment of goal mouth drama the ball was forced in to the goal for Sutton's 6th - again by Tom Edwards! A huge sigh of relief came from Suttons players and supports as one more goal in 7 minutes was surely possible! As Sutton pushed forward Old Boards continued to look for fast breakouts. All looked lost to Sutton as on one final breakout Old Boards looked set to score only to see Dougie Muir lunge forward and take the ball away just as the forward was sweeping it in to the goal.... But Sutton couldn't get the 7th and as the final whistle blew - Sutton thought all was lost in their quest for the league championship.
However, as SVHC won the match 6 - 0, they were drawn with Brom Becks U14's with 12 points, both teams had the same goal difference (17) and same number of goals scored (25). So the championship would be determined by 'the result of the match between the teams' - and SVHC had beaten Brom Becks the previous weekend 2- 1!!
So SVHC are the U14 Champions!!
It was a fantastic effort for all the team who have played through the whole season and is a clear indication of the quality coaching provided to the SVHC Junior section.
