The first match of the season was friendly against a generally young and lively Holcombe side. Valence contained many of the regulars from last season plus several new and not so new faces. The first half was lively with Holcombe just shading things 2-1 but only with the post preventing things being all even.

The youth and fitness of the visitors told in the end and the match rather lost its shape Holcombe scored two further goals but again, the post stopped Sutton valence from scoring twice. The team is looking forward to the league campaign.

Sutton Valence started spritely against Marden Russetts in their pre season friendly and for the first 15 minutes had most of the play. Alex Auger made some good runs up the right wing and Hannah Knott dominated the midfield with her steady tackling and strong passing. An impressive attack by Sarah Lacey and newcomer Lauren Dewart resulted in Dewart's first goal for the club putting the home side 1 nil up.

Marden retalliated with a counter attack and a cracking shot on goal which was magnificently saved by defender Emma Dickenson. Valence dropped down to 10 players about 10 minutes before half time. They battled hard, but a weakened left side gave Marden an opportunity to equalise, which they gratefully took with menace.

The second half was not so good for Valence. The depleated midfield struggled due to lack of fitness and the one player deficit truely took its toll. Marden took advantage of the space and continued to push for goal. Riona Evenden made a number of great saves keeping the goal tally level. Shortly before the final whistle a penalty corner was given to Marden and a shot on goal crossed the line to give Marden the victory.

This was an excellent start for Sutton Valence Ladies! To play with 10 players and only lose by 1 goal to a team 2 divisions above them is encouraging for the season.
