Having gained promotion last season Sutton Valence played their first league division 2 game against Maidstone 3s. Showing good defensive ability we soaked up the pressure for the first 10/15 minutes. SV then began to dominate possession and territory, leading to Sarah Lacey scoring from a short corner.

From a free hit in goal number two followed shortly after with a lucky touch inside the D from Anna Kish.

The second half saw Maidstone lift their game with SV attempting to defend their lead and score on the break. Maidstone eventually got rewarded for their dominance with a goal from short corner strike. Despite lacking fitness the home team held the game for the last 10 minutes to earn themselves a well deserved 3 points. A promising start to the new season.

Sutton Russets faced a tough start to their first league game of the season against Folkestone. Unfortunately the Russets only started with 10 players so faced an uphill struggle from the beginning. The first half was closely fought but Folkestone gained a 3-0 lead from one or two of their dubious players. Towards the end of the first half, a determined attack from the forwards produced a goal from Carol Baxter which was thoroughly deserved.

The second half started very positively and a second goal was scored within the first 5 minutes from Carol. The Russets had their fair share of penalty corners but failed to score from them. A penalty flick was also awarded to the Russets and Mel Russell-Vick stepped forward to the challenge.

Unfortunately Mel missed by inches, which left the score at 3-2. The defence worked hard at keeping the break away players at bay and clearing the balls when needed. In the last 10 minutes of the game, Margaret Turner drove the ball up the wing and crossed the ball over to Carol to complete her hat trick.

Everybody played really well in the match with determination and lots of team spirit. The Russets are looking forward to making a great impact in Division 6 this year.

Man of the Match goes to Carol Baxter for her superb hat trick of goals.

    Report

If games against Maidstone are generally tough, this was tougher than normal. The fact that there was only one umpire in the first half, courtesy of Maidstone Women’s team, proved to be little problem since all the play was in the same half – Sutton Valence’s. From the off Maidstone set the pace with good positioning and accurate passing taking the game round Valence’s midfield and putting pressure onto their defence. It was not long before this was turned into positive results from open play, and by half time Maidstone were five up.

In the second half one player from each time went off to umpire the game. Although the main pressure remained in the Valence half, there were a number of promising breakouts by them which led to more positive attacks. Several of these resulted in shots on goal but none was successful. Maidstone meantime managed to put away another three.

Next week the two teams meet again, with Sutton Valence keen to provide a sterner test.
