    Report

Sutton Russets started off their first league game of the season and faced tough opponents Folkestone in their opening game. In the first half both teams were playing well and the Russets had a lot of attacking play. The midfield were instrumental in securing the ball and providing the forwards with lots of opportunities to drive towards goal, unfortunately Folkestone's defence were just too strong. Towards the end of the first half, newcomer Hayley Beaney charged down the wing with the ball and scored a great goal after driving into the D just before half time.

In the second half, the blazing sun was zapping the energy out of the Russets and Folkestone had more opportunities in attack. The defence were relentless in preventing Folkestone from scoring but Folkestone were able to claim a couple of penalty corners which they capitalised on both occasions.

The score did not reflect the game and this should have been an easy win for the Russets but more practice is needed in our defensive short corner routines. Player of the match goes to Sophie Garner who was a consistent figure in the midfield and made some excellent breaks to the attack.
