Sutton Valence 2nds visited local rivals Marden Russets in the last of this season friendly’s before the first league game, home to Tunbridge Wells. Due to the unseasonal hot weather Valence arrived with a squad of 14 expecting a tough game.
Valence started the stronger of the two teams and dominated possession. Marden defended well and made it hard for Valence to score the opening goal. With Valence over committing, a wayward pass from the defense resulted in a one on one with goal keeper Al Burt, who sadly, was left will little help, and as such Marden opened the scoring. Valence refusing to roll over recommenced their dominance within the Marden half and leveled the score, from a well work short corner, which was coolly converted by Captain Andrew Lee. The score remained 1-1 till the intervention of the half time whistle.
The second half Valence started with only 9 men and Marden 12, but with a little shuffle around from valence to cover the sin binned John Edmed, they gained the lead from a short corner slotted away by Peter Posnette, for his first goal of the afternoon. Valence now back to the full allowed 11 players further increased their lead with goals from Tom Edwards, Peter Posnette and Andy Devlin. After the final whistle had gone the remaining short corner was calmly converted by Clive Baxter for Marden to score their second goal of the afternoon.
On refection this was a very tight game and on another day Marden could have easily taken away all three points. A good team performance from the old guard defense to the youthful forwards line resulted in a well contested hard win. Valence will entertain Tunbridge Wells 2nds which will be another hard game.
